Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Not stated. Characteristically exposed about town of Paso Robles [San Luis Obispo Co.], from where they extend west toward Santa Lucia Mountains and for many miles north and east of that place, filling valley of the Estrella and its tributaries (Fairbanks, 1898). Type region: Salinas Valley in Coast Ranges northwest of Santa Maria district, south-central CA (Woodring and Bramlette, 1950).
