Geologic age:

Late Devonian (Famennian); possibly Early Mississippian (Tournaisian; Kinderhookian)


Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from Silvertip syncline, because it is thickest on Lone Butte, [in T. 23 N., R. 13 W., Amphitheatre Mountain 7.5-min quadrangle, 1994 ed., Flathead Co.], which lies nearly in center of syncline. Is known only to occur in 3 areas --Lone Butte, Spotted Bear Mountain, and Pentagon Mountain, [west of Continental Divide in Flathead Co., northwestern MT] (Deiss, 1933).
