Type section: bluff 0.5 mi north of Redwater Creek, near mouth of Crow Creek, 9 mi northwest of Spearfish, SD, in S/2 sec. 2, T. 7 N., R. 1 E., Butte Co., SD. Origin of name not stated by author, but probably named from Redwater Creek (Imlay, 1947).
