Type area: in uplands west of south end of Gallatin Range, south of upper Maple Creek, in Yellowstone National Park, [Mount Holmes and Madison Junction 15-min quadrangles, Park and Teton Cos.], northwestern WY. Occurs as widely scattered patches. [Named from exposures north of Madison River in Madison Junction 15-min quadrangle, Teton Co., Yellowstone National Park, northwestern WY] (Christiansen and Blank, 1972; see also Christiansen and Blank, 1974, USGS Geol. Quad. Map GQ-1190, scale 1:62,500).
