Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from exposures on Carters Creek, Maury Co., Nashville dome, central TN. Carters Creek arises from many several tributaries about 8 mi north of Columbia, Maury Co., flows essentially southward, joining Rutherford Creek about 3.5 mi north of Columbia (US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200).
