Type locality: along South Fork of New River, between bridge along NC Highway 163 and nonconformity at base of formation, 23.7 km north-northeast along Ashe-Alleghany Co. line, Lat. 36 deg. 31 min. 20 sec. N., Long. 81 deg. 19 min. 50 sec. W. Named from Ashe Co., northwestern NC (Rankin, 1970).
