Named from exposures near Exeter Post Office, Union Co., northeastern NM (Lee, 1902).
[Correct spelling of town is Exter. Name of town changed to Johnson, which was (no longer exists) located in northeast corner of county, just south of CO line (USGS GNIS database; Bob Julyan, compiler, 1992, NM Geog. Names Database).]
Type section: [just south of Steamboat Butte], in SW/4 SW/4 SE/4 sec. 28, T. 32 N., R. 35 E., Union Co., northeastern NM (Lucas and others, 1987).
