800 ft northwest of Wilbur Cross Parkway tunnel (Fritts, 1963). Named from topographic feature known as The Buttress, which protrudes from the west side of West Rock Ridge, New Haven quadrangle, New Haven Co., CT (Fritts, 1962).

Named Buttress Diabase (Fritts, 1962). Described (Fritts, 1963). Redefined Buttress Dolerite; Age modified (Rodgers, 1985).
