Type section: about 150 ft east of County Road 610, about 1 mi north of ford across Little River, Tazewell Co., VA. Named from settlement of Wardell near Tazewell-Russell Co. line (Cooper and Prouty, 1943).
Unit Name History:
Named Wardell formation (Cooper and Prouty, 1943).
Extended into TN (Prouty, 1946).
Revised to Wardell limestone (Brent, 1963).
Revised, assigned to Chickamauga Group (Ruppel and Walker, 1984).
Revised; Areal limits (Ryder, 1992).
