Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named for fact that town of Longview [in T. 21 S., R. 2 W., Montevallo 15-min quadrangle], Shelby Co., northern AL, is located on a rather wide area of the formation (Butts, 1926).
Best exposures: (1) on Little Cahaba River, in sec. 17, T. 24 N., R. 11 E., [Montevallo 15-min quadrangle, Bibb Co.]; (2) on Buck Creek btw. Helena and Pelham [Helena 7.5-min quadrangle, Shelby Co.]; and (3) in Cahaba Valley just north of reservoir of Birmingham waterworks in NE/4 sec. 16, T. 18 S., R. 1 W. [probably now beneath Lake Purdy, Cahaba Heights 7.5-min quadrangle, Jefferson Co.] (Butts, 1926).
