Type Locality:
Type area: South Hero Island, Grand Isle Co., VT, 2 mi southeast of Cumberland Head. Named from Cumberland Head near Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY (Kay, 1937).

Unit Name History:
Named Cumberland Head shales (Cushing, 1905).
Correlations (Cushing and Ruedemann, 1910; Ulrich, 1911).
