Summary:

Pg. 585. Papoose Creek Formation. Present in Pocatello area, Bannock County, southeastern Idaho. Is poorly exposed; recognized by float. Consists of light-gray and dark-brown, thin (1 to 3 mm thick) siltite [and] quartzite beds; layers are undulating, broken, and offset in places. Thickness 600 feet (180 m) at type section. Overlies Blackrock Canyon Limestone (new); lower contact placed at top of highest carbonate of Blackrock Canyon. Conformably underlies Caddy Canyon Quartzite (new); upper contact placed at base of lowermost light-colored orthoquartzite of Caddy Canyon. Is presumed to be of marine origin. Age is late Precambrian (Precambrian Z). (Papoose Creek Formation adopted by the USGS.)
Type locality: south of Portneuf River, about 5 mi southeast of Pocatello, Bannock Co., ID.
Type section: in headwaters and east of canyon of Papoose Creek, south of Portneuf River, in sec. 35, T. 7 S., R. 35 E., and in secs. 2 and 3, T. 8 S., R. 35 E., Bannock Co., ID. Named from exposures on Papoose Creek.

Summary:

Papoose Creek Formation is geographically extended into the report area, the Pine Grove-Blawn Mountain area, Beaver County, Utah. Age is Proterozoic Z.

Summary:

Newly assigned as the lowest formation (of 6) of the Brigham Group (group rank extended to southeast ID) in the northern Bannock and Portneuf Ranges, and as 1 of 7 formations in southern Portneuf and Bear River Ranges, Bannock and Bear Lake Cos, ID in the Northern Rocky Mountain region. Assigned also to depositional sequence 1 in this report which includes the fine-grained quartz arenites and siltstones that were deposited in tidal flat and subtidal environments. Is included in Brigham of ID [even though it is not included in Brigham of UT] because this rock was included by Anderson (1928) in his Brigham Quartzite as mapped between Pocatello and Inkom, ID. Gradationally overlies Blackrock Canyon Limestone and gradationally underlies Caddy Canyon Quartzite. Of Late Proterozoic age. Cross section.
