Summary:

Floyd Church named as basal member of Millingport Formation (new) in Davidson Co., central NC. Unit is composed of gray argillite and siltstone. Thickness ranges from 900 to 1800 m. Overlies Flat Swamp Member of Cid Formation (both new) and conformably underlies Yadkin Member of Millingport. Age is Ordovician(?).

Summary:

Middle Cambrian age for the Floyd Church Member of the Millingport Formation determined from trilobites. Unit consists mostly of mudstone. Underlies Yadkin member.

Summary:

Millingport Formation abandoned and its Floyd Church and Yadkin Members raised to formation status and assigned to Albemarle Group. Age of Albemarle and its four formations (Tillery, Cid, Floyd Church, and Yadkin) changed to latest Proterozoic on the basis of the fossil PTERIDINIUM, diagnostic of Vendian-Ediacaran fauna, from the middle or upper Floyd Church. This trilobite had previously been misidentified as Cambrian. A U/Pb concordia-intercept date of 586+/-10 Ma for zircons in the upper Uwharrie Formation, which underlies the Albemarle, sets a maximum age limit for the Group.

Summary:

Authors adopt terminology established by Conley and Bain (1965) as modified by Gibson and Teeter (1984: Carolina Geological Society Field Trip Guidebook). Floyd Church is assigned as upper member to McManus Formation, which is reinstated. Flat Swamp Member is not present in study area but lies between upper and lower members of McManus elsewhere. Cid Formation not used. Floyd Church includes strata within and adjacent to Gold Hill shear zone previously assigned to Tillery Formation by Sundelius and Stromquist (1978). Gradationally overlies unnamed mudstone member; gradationally underlies Yadkin Graywacke. Age not stated.
