Unit Name

This is the name associated with a particular geologic (Lithologic or Geochronologic) unit. You may enter a partial (the beginning letters) or complete unit name. New! Now you can enter lithologic characteristics (i.e. "formation" or "limestone") can be included as part of the unit name (see Sample 3 below). In the latter case the search will repeat, as necessary, removing the last word of the input unit name, until a match is found. All matches from the usage data are also reported. Upper and lower case characters are considered equal so either may be used.

Sample 1:
  • To conduct a search for the specific unit "Dakota" enter in the Unit Name field.
Sample 2:
  • You can also search for units by entering a partial name using its starting letters. For example, search for all unit names that start with the letters "Peak" by entering in the Unit Name field.
Sample 3:
  • As mentioned above, you can now search by lithologic characteristics (i.e. "formation" or "limestone") can be included as part of the unit name. For example, "Dakota" is a unit name with usage of "Dakota sandstone" or "Dakota group". So for this example, you may enter in the Unit Name field.
Leave this entry blank if you do not wish to limit your search by Unit Name.
