How to Search The Database

Starting with either initial search page (Comprehensive or Quick Search), you may define search criteria for any of the following parameters (additional help is available by clicking on the desired keyword);

The "Comprehensive Search" option allows for searching on all parameters listed.
* - indicates search parameters available for the "Quick Search" option.
  1. *Geologic Age(s). ( Definitions are also available.)
    ("All Ages" are assumed if none are selected.)
  2. Type of Unit
  3. *Unit Name
  4. Reference Summary Title
  5. *Reference Summary Author
  6. *State, Territory, or Country
After defining search criteria for the above parameters, click on the option to initiate a search of the database. The search engine will then respond with a results page that contains a list of qualified UNITs found in the database. Options on the results page include:
  1. View a detailed description for each entry by selecting a specific Unit from the results list. The detailed description page contains information regarding Unit Name, Usage, Age, Geologic Province, Areal Extent, Type Locality, Remarks, Subunits, and History. You may also view additional information by selecting the "Reference Summaries" link from this page.

  2. Conduct a . This option will return to the catalog's main search page and allow for a completely new search.

  3. Use the option to refine the current search. This option will return to the catalog's main search page with current entries maintained in the form and allow for a refinement of the search.
A few additional comments:
  • On the initial search page, you may to clear any entries from the form.

  • It is possible to conduct a search that will result in listing the entire database
    (i.e. Select the option without restricting any search criteria.) Caution: This may result in a very large number of "finds".
